With a high HLB value of 15.0, it is highly hydrophilic, making it effective in stabilizing oil-in-water emulsions. Tween 80 is miscible with water, ethanol, vegetable oil, ethyl acetate, and methanol but insoluble in mineral oil, with a pH range of 5.5–7.2 for a 1% aqueous solution. In food, it prevents ice crystal formation in products like ice cream, while in pharmaceuticals, it stabilizes formulations such as vaccines and protein therapies. Despite its versatility and general safety, it may cause mild irritation on contact, and excessive consumption or exposure has been linked to adverse health effects, including hypersensitivity reactions and organ toxicity. Tween 80 solutions are prone to autoxidation under conditions such as light, heat, or in the presence of copper ions.
