Diethyl malonate(Cas 105-53-3) Usage

Uses

Diethyl malonate is a key starting material in malonic ester synthesis, used for producing:
Artificial flavorings
Vitamins (B1, B6)
Pharmaceuticals (e.g., barbiturates, chloroquine, butazolidin, barbital)
Agrochemicals

Catalytic Applications Diethyl malonate is used in catalytic addition reactions with β-nitrostyrene, often with bispidine catalysts, in solvents like toluene and 1,4-dioxane.
Purification Purified by fractional distillation, often under reduced pressure.
Metabolism Partially metabolized to provide energy (32% available in dietary tests with chicks).
Hydrolyzed to ethanol and malonic acid, which inhibits enzymes like succinic dehydrogenase.

Chemical Reactions

Acylation with magnesium chloride and triethylamine, K2CO3-catalyzed addition to allenic ketones.

Safety Profile

Mildly toxic by ingestion. A skin irritant. Combustible liquid when exposed to heat or flame; can react with oxidizing materials. To fight fire, use water to blanket fire, foam, CO2, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes. See also ESTERS.

, Chemistry 2024, 6(3), 387-406;

The aim of this work was the investigation of novel organocatalysts for the Michael addition of diethyl malonate to β-nitrostyrene. The methodology of the study included NMR titration, reaction monitoring by NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), product characterization by MALDI, IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and elemental analysis.

Quasielastic light scattering of polystyrene in diethyl malonate in semidilute concentration

C. H. Wang; Z. Sun; Q. R. Huang

, J. Chem. Phys. 105, 6052–6059 (1996)

A detailed light scattering study of polystyrene (PS) in diethyl malonate (DEM) semidilute solution has been carried out. DEM is a theta solvent for PS at 32 °C. Dynamic light scattering measurements carried out at temperatures closed to the theta temperature show only a diffusion mode in the intensity autocorrelation function; no slow modes are found in the semidilute PS/DEM solution with concentration up to more than 18 times the overlap concentration.
